First day of school

Avoiding Irene....

To get away from Irene we've traveled to Winchester, VA. It's about 3 1/2-4 hours away from Mathews. Winchester and the surrounding area were the site the numerous fights during the Civil War, as both the Confederate and Union armies strove to capture that key strategic position in the Shenandoah Valley. Winchester is also the location of the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, which has excited since 1924 and draws about 250,000 visitors to the area. Shenandoah University is also here.

We left the house around 10am this morning (which worked out well because at about noon they activated a mandatory evacuation for our area!) We got here around 2:30 and checked into the Best Western. We're right near the mall and downtown so we drove around for a bit and then parked and walked around the downtown area. We visited the library, which is BEAUTIFUL! We also stopped in several different shops as well as the Old Court House Civil War Museum. A lovely afternoon.

Now we're relaxing and waiting for the rain. We might go to the taverns tomorrow or to the movies - we're playing it by ear. Avoiding a hurricane and taking a mini-vacation!
