Today was our last day in Columbia. I tried to sleep in, but Mom did not allow that so we started our adventures! After breakfast we walked what we were told was a short walk to the mall, but it turned out to be rather lengthy. When we arrived most of the mall was closed as it is new years day and sadly the air-conditioning wasn't turned on. But, we walked back to the hotel and I sat and cooled off while Mom walked on the beach. After a quick lunch we walked over to the grocery store and picked up some more water and then got ice cream on the way back. The afternoon was spent sitting poolside enjoying a good book! No better way to end a vacation!

Here we go!

Last year’s resolutions:
1. Travel 5 new places (inside or outside of the US)
a. Austin, TX
b. New Orleans, LA
c. Columbia (the country, not South Carolina)
That appears to be it for new places. I did go to Florida (for Carly's baby shower), Philly (for Andrew and Karen's wedding), New York (duh), San Antonio (to see Bill) and Chicago (to see Nealy and David), but I've been to all those places before.

2. Try or learn 5 new things
a. Zen yoga Pilates (hanging from the ceiling!)
b. Took a cooking class (and didn't burn anything!)
c. Went to a drive-in movie theater (and saw Wonder Woman!)
d. Went wake-boarding (and didn't break anything!)
e. Went on a safari in Natural Bridge, TX

3. Lose 25 pounds and keep it off
a. I didn't gain anything, that's always a plus.

This year’s resolutions:
1.Travel 5 new places (inside or outside of the US)
2. Try or learn 5 new things
3. Finish my EdD
4. Lost 25 pounds and keep it off
5. Plan a wedding!

Today was our first full day in Cartegna. Did I mention that it's hot here? We had a half-day tour where we started by driving around the new town. We headed to the Fortress of San Felipe, built by the Spanish during the colonial era and located on the hill of San Lorenzo. Then we took a drive down to the old town and walked around the colorful streets and winding alleyways of the area. Lots of shopping and little things to see! We also went to the Emerald museum where we learned about emeralds, but didn't buy any. The rest of the day was spent sitting by the pool and exploring the area. The celebrate the evening we ordered room service and are going to plat bananagrams.

We slept in a bit this morning and then took all the major forms of transportation in Medellin- bus, train, tram and gondola! Thankfully, we didn't get lost! We had lunch at an upscale food court and then flew to Cartagena! We have a lovely seaside resort for the last few days.

Today we explored Medellin! It was a bit rainy, but not bad at all. We started with a metro ride to "Comuna 13", which was once an inaccessible area, but is now famous for its unique graffiti and electric stairs to go down and up the mountain. We had a delicious frozen fruit treat as well! After a lovely lunch we headed to the sculpture park of Botero and saw some of his fascinating larger-than-life sculptures. They were a little odd overall. We finished the day at the Museum of modern Art, which featured a lot of Botero's work and some other artists. This city is very metropolitan and very different from the other areas that we have seen.

Today we spent the entire day on the bus totally a 9-hour adventure with lunch and two rest stops. At the first rest stop we got to see a giant mug! Who doesn't love a giant mug? We had a delicious lunch with a beautiful view and finally ended our adventure with a stop at a small shop that made almojaba. We are now in Medellin for the next two days.

27 December 2017 @ 07:31 pm
Today we started at the Quimbaya gold museum. Then we headed to the town of Filandia, where we had a view of the Columbian Andes. Next stop was the drive through the Cocora Valley in the region of Quindio. We took what was supposed to be an easy hike, but they totally lied. If anyone asks, I made it all the way to the top. No one will ever know.

We ended in the town of Salento, where we enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate and did some shopping. A busy day!

26 December 2017 @ 06:17 pm
Today we explored the coffee triangle! We started at a plantation, where we learned how coffee is grown and produced. Then we headed to Hacienda San Alberto, the most awarded coffee producer in Columbia. We had a master of coffee lead us in a tasting and identifying of the different flavors of a freshly brewed cup of coffee. The view from the top of the mountain was gorgeous! All in all, an interesting day!

Today was our second day in Bogota, and, as it is Christmas day, most of the country is still closed. But, they once again did a good job filling the day. Though I got seriously bus sick, we got a lovely view of the city. We saw some local markets and did some shopping. Lots of walking! Whew! Now we're in the airport waiting to go to the coffee triangle for the next few days!

Due to the fact that it's Christmas Eve most of the country is closed. However, our tour guide and assistant did a wonderful job of finding alternative activities. This morning after breakfast we headed to a local farmers market, which had a mixture of flowers and food. While the live chickens that they were being killed were a bit much for me, they did have some lovely treats (see pictures below). We then headed to a botanical garden, which I always love! The weather is beautiful here too, it's 65° and sunny.

Instead of going to lunch with the group (as we had packed sandwiches), mom and I walked around the town where we found a beautiful square full of lots of vendors selling last-minute Christmas gifts. We ended our day at the salt Cathedral, which is very interesting to see. We're back in the room repacking and organizing and we have our first dinner tonight! All in all, a great day!
